The Best Women Science Fiction Authors

By Raymond Lockley

Any list of best sci-fi authors tends to be incredibly subjective (and mine is no exception) and based on personal tastes. I've already done an alphabet of the best sci-fi authors, which doubtlessly reflects such subjectivity; but any such list, sweeping though it may be, will tend to marginalize female authors, who have only emerged as forces within sci-fi comparatively recently. And that doesn't seem fair. It also opens up an opportunity to stir the pot with yet another subjective list.

So, with apologies to women whom I have perhaps not yet read (or used a pseudonym and I didn't know they were female), here's my modest contribution to the conversation:

  1. Karen Traviss
  2. Syne Mitchell
  3. Nancy Kress
  4. Linda Nagata
  5. Madeleine L'Engle
  6. Emily Devenport
